Overview
Sherri McGirt works with clients in estate and wealth management planning, estate administration and estate controversies. She also works extensively with small business owners in multiple business transactions including management succession and buying and selling business. Sherri works with clients in the tax planning area and represents clients in tax controversies.
Sherri is a native of Charlotte and a resident Shareholder in the Firm’s Charlotte, North Carolina office. Upon graduation from law school, Sherri worked in the Estates and Gift Tax Division of the Internal Revenue Service, Greensboro, North Carolina, as an auditor of estate and gift tax returns. In 1979, she joined the accounting firm of Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte and Touche) as a tax supervisor working in various areas of tax planning and compliance.
In 1981, she joined the Charlotte law firm of Weinstein & Sturgis, P.A. as an associate, later becoming a shareholder, working in the areas of tax, estate planning, corporate transactional and commercial real estate. After practicing with several firms in the Charlotte area, Sherri joined McNair Law Firm, P.A. as a Shareholder in September of 1999.
In addition to her membership in various Bars, Sherri is a member of the AICPA and the NCACPA. She is a founding member of the Planning Committee and Board of Directors of the J. Nelson Young Tax Institute sponsored by the UNC School of Law which is currently in its twenty fifth year.
In the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, Sherri has served as Chairman of the Legal Services for the Elderly, the Lawyers Referral Service, and the Estate Planning, Probate and Fiduciary Section. She has also served as media representative in the area of Taxation and on the Executive Board.
She has served on the council for the Tax Section and Quality of Life Task Force for the North Carolina Bar Association. She is a past member of the council for the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section, having previously served as Co-chairman of the Public Education and Professional Relations Committee.
Sherri has been active in community affairs including Pack 55, Mecklenburg Council Cub Scouts and the Cabinet of Professional Advisors for the Foundation For the Carolinas. She is a member of the Board of Directors and Operations Committee for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. She is a past public member of the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators.
- Sherri has represented numerous clients before the Internal Revenue Service in tax controversy matters; Sherri works with clients in the estate and wealth management areas, planning for estate succession, preserving estate assets and reducing estate taxes. She worked as an auditor with the Internal Revenue Service in the Estate and Gift Tax Division in Greensboro, NC and as a tax supervisor for a public accounting firm prior to entering private law practice. She has represented clients in estate controversies including oral arguments before the North Carolina Supreme Court.
